TOPIC: MY FATHER, MY MENTOR (II)

MEMORISE

Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do, for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner" (John 5:19).

Proverbs 4:10-19

[10]. Hear, my son, and receive my sayings,

And the years of your life will be many.

[11]. I have taught you in the way of wisdom;

I have led you in right paths.

[12]. When you walk, your steps will not be hindered, And when you run, you will not stumble.

[13]. Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; Keep her, for she is your life.

[14]. Do not enter the path of the wicked, And do not walk in the way of evil.

[15]. Avoid it, do not travel on it; Turn away from it and pass on.

EXPOSITION

Hear what Sudhakar Rao wrote about his father: "The love and patience with which my mother raised me have given me a lifelong appreciation for what it takes to be a good parent. Looking back, it seems like the naughty and playful child that I was back then must have been a constant source of concern for her, but somehow, she found a way to let me be myself, while also guiding me in the right direction. I was lucky that my father was equally good at balancing his encouragement of my natural strengths, with a firm and principled approach to parenting. Today I'd like to look at my relationship with my father. It would not be an exaggeration at all, if I was to say that he is one of the anchors of my life. His influence, in words and actions, has shaped my personality and given me a lofty ideal to aspire. A lot of what I have achieved in life is in some way a reflection of his advice and the example he set for me as a person. Wow! My father, my mentor! It is a beautiful and incredible thing to have that kind of statement written about you by your child, for the world to learn from.

In like manner, our Memory Scripture today, speaks volumes about the kind of relationships esus, the Son of God, had and enjoyed with His Father. No wonder, the whole Bible is all about Him (cf Lk. 24:44-45). A father-child mentorship ought to leave indelible godly marks on the mentee, to shape his/her world, lastingly. It is not too late to start or restart

PRAYER POINTS

1. O Lord God, forgive me where I have failed in my parental responsibilities.

2. Lord, be my sufficiency in discharging my parental duties faithfully.

3. Lord, help our parents to better understand the place of the home in nation building, and to play their God-given parts in their children's upbringing.
