Father's Day

MY FATHER, MY MENTOR (1)
Read: Proverbs 4:1-9

[1]Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
[2]For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
[3]For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
[4]He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
[5]Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
[6]Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
[7]Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
[8]Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
[9]She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.

MEMORISE: My son, give attention to my words; incline your car to my sayings (Proverbs 4:20).

EXPOSITION

Lisa Sasso, an executive coach and motivational speaker, wrote the following about her dad as today is Father's Day: "He has many traits that I respect and admire and have always tried to emulate. Dad has always been a provider. He is a hard worker, friendly, outgoing, family-focused and goal-oriented. It is obvious now, that as a kid, I was given the right training and skill sets to start my development in becoming a coach. Dad gave me confidence, support, and constant encouragement. He was (and still is to this day) my biggest cheerleader and I always knew that I could go to him for anything. Growing up, he always said, find something that you love to do. He encouraged me to find my passion and go after it." My father, my mentor!

Just like the story of Lisa, the writer of Proverbs was privileged to have been born and raised by one of the most revered fathers in the ancient Bible times, King David (2 Sam. 12:24-25). No child is born without a father, but not everyone is mentored rightly by his dad. Are you a father already, or in the making? How would you like to be remembered by your children? Don't you like to be their boast before their peers and others, during or after your lifetime?

Let it be clear to you today that, every child loves to be mentored by his parents. Children derive their self-esteem in their fathers. They look forward to their fathers for direction early in life, and this helps shape the course of their dreams. Dear parents, your children hope in you; don't fail them (Prov. 4:3-4).

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY: CAC GHB 586

1. Abide among us with Thy grace,
Lord, Jesus, evermore;
Nor let us e'er to sin give place,
Nor grieve Him we adore.

2. Abide among us with Thy word,
Redeemer whom we love;
Thy help and mercy here afford,
And life with Thee above.

3. Abide among us with Thy ray,
O Light that lighten'st all,
And let Thy truth preserve our way,
Nor suffer us to fall.

4. Abide with us to bless us still,
O bounteous Lord of peace;
With grace and pow'r our spirits fill,
Our faith and love increase.

5. Abide among us as our shield,
O Captain of Thy host,
That to the world we may not yield,
Nor e'er forsake our post.

6. Abide with us in faithful love,
Our God and Saviour be;
Thy help in need, O let us prove,
And keep us true to Thee.

Amen.
