TOPIC: THE ACCUSER AND THE ACCUSED
MEMORISE
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him (Zechariah 3:1).
READ: Zechariah 3:1-10
[1]. Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him.
[2]. And the Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?”
[3]. Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the Angel.
[4]. Then He answered and spoke to those who stood before Him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And to him He said, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.”
[5]. And I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head, and they put the clothes on him. And the Angel of the Lord stood by.
[6]. Then the Angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying,
[7]. “Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘If you will walk in My ways, And if you will keep My command, Then you shall also judge My house, And likewise have charge of My courts;
I will give you places to walk Among these who stand here.
[8]. ‘Hear, O Joshua, the high priest, You and your companions who sit before you, For they are a wondrous sign; For behold, I am bringing forth My Servant the BRANCH.
[9]. For behold, the stone That I have laid before Joshua: Upon the stone are seven eyes.
Behold, I will engrave its inscription,’ Says the Lord of hosts, ‘And I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.
[10]. In that day,’ says the Lord of hosts, ‘Everyone will invite his neighbor Under his vine and under his fig tree.’”
EXPOSITION
In today's text, the accused is Joshua, the high priest, who stood as a representative of God's people in the presence of the LORD. Joshua represented Israel in all their faults, short-comings, and sins, Satan is the accuser who is always out, finding faults and criticising God's people! Despite the righteous God's commendation of Job in his generation, Satan still tried to fault him (Job 1:9-10). If he did that to the righteous Job, would he do less to us? Satan always stands in opposition to repentance, reformation and desire to find mercy for God's people!
What better way to discourage people in the great controversy than to make them think their sins are just too great for the Lord to forgive? How many souls, all through history, have fallen prey to one of Satan's most wicked devices-weakening man's spirit with the guilt of yet-to-be-forgiven sins? Even without an accuser to throw them up in God's face, our sins are more than enough to condemn us in this age! However, here is the good news: even if our sins are as red as scarlet, they will be as white as snow, provided we fully repent of, and forsake them (Isa. 1:18). The accuser was hurled down on earth; he keeps accusing the brethren (Rev. 12:10). Do not dwell on your sins, take a hard stance against sin in your life. Make the necessary amendments, and lay claim to the promises of God in His Word.
SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:
CAC GHB 855
1. Far away the noise of strife
Upon my ear is falling
Then I know the sins of earth
Beset on ev'ry hand
Doubt and fear and things of earth
In vain to me are calling
None of these shall move me
From Beulah land.
Chorus:
I'm living on the mountain, underneath a cloudless sky
I'm drinking at the fountain that
Never shall I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulah land
2. Far below the storm of doubt upon the world is beating
Sons of men in battle long the enemy withstand
Safe am I within the castle of God's world retreating
Nothing then can reach me, 'tis
Beulah land.
3. Let the storm breezes blow their cry cannot alarm me
I am safely sheltered here protected by God's hand
Here the sun is always shining here there's naught can harm me
I am safe for ever in Beulah land
4. Viewing here the works of God, I sink in contemplation
Hearing now His blessed voice I see the way is planned
Dwelling in the spirit, here I learn of full salvation
Gladly will I tarry in Beulah land.
Amen.
