TOPIC: DO NOT REVENGE!

MEMORISE

Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord (Romans 12:19).

READ:

Romans 12:17-21

[17]. Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.

[19]. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

[20]. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

[21]. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

EXPOSITION

Man is a social creature. Hence, the presence of people co- existing in the society. Animals do not have this nature. As we live together, we interact with one another. However, it is impossible to live together and interact without stepping on one another's toes. As iron sharpens iron, warmth and chopping off happen (cf. Prov. 27-17). In relationships, expect offence so that peradventure it comes, you would have built a large heart to contain it. However, our society is full of evils and ills, not only due to the massiveness of our sins, but also for the circuit of wrongdoings that is unbroken! Evil will continue to radiate except one decides to break it! As a child of God, you must resist the devil to put him to flight (Jas. 4:7), because he is our principal foe, with his lieutenants (1 Pet. 5:8). However, we are not to fight our supposed human enemies. Are you offended by someone? The Bible forbids you from taking laws into your hands (Matt. 5:39) or being vengeful.

Revenge has never yielded any good, for instance, Herodias case against John the Baptist (Matt. 14:6-10). What became of Absalom who vengefully murdered Amnon (2 Sam. 13:22ff)? Haman ended up killing himself because he wouldn't overlook Mordecai's supposed "arrogance" (Est. 7:10). Allow the Impartial Judge's justice to avail for you, like He promised. Do good to even your perceived enemy. Let not evil overcome your good; overcome evil with good.
