TOPIC: THE SIN OF ACHAN

BIBLE READING:

JOSHUA 7:10-14, 18-26

KEY VERSE:

“Israel hath sinned for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.” Joshua 7:11

MEDITATION:

The benevolence and mercies of God do not detract from his demand for loyalty and punishment for disloyalty. That was the reason Israel suffered an embarrassing defeat from Ai after the big win at Jericho (Joshua 6). Achan, the culprit was not spared. Inexplicably however, his whole family suffered for his sin. The reason sometimes, consequences for sin can have terrible effect on the innocent – very close to what security experts call collateral damage!

Believers should always avoid anything that will attract God’s judgement. If one falls into sin by choice, like Achan who stole the accursed stuff of Jericho, or by error or carelessness, there is a propitiation (1 John 2:1-2) for sin through the shed blood of Jesus which is ever efficacious.  Confession and non-pretentious repentance must be urgent.

It is important to note that the believer’s family members will not be judged because of their father’s or any family member’s sin in our dispensation. True, there could be spill-over consequences for family members, but it is the soul that sins that shall die – sent to hell! This is so because consequent upon the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross, God’s anger for sin came upon Him for all times (Hebrews 9:28), such that whosoever receives Him as Lord and Saviour will no longer pay for their sin as Achan’s entire family paid for the sin of their father with their lives (Joshua 7:25-26)

PRAYER:

Dear Lord, deliver me from the spirit of Achan greed and covetousness in Jesus name.
