[28]And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

[29]And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

MESSAGE

Fasting is necessary for one's spiritual growth, but it should not be engaged in without a purpose in mind. Many people engage in a fast because it was announced in their church or imposed on them by their parents, hence, they have no good result to show for it. When you fast and pray for a specific purpose, your desires are controlled even when it is difficult because your mind is focused on something bigger than food.

For example, if the breadwinner of your home is down with a kidney problem and needs God to give him/her a new kidney, that's a serious purpose to declare a fast for until a miracle happens. You might even lose your appetite because you're worried about the situation. I tell my children that when the purpose of your fast is strong enough, it will motivate you to rely solely on God. This will also make you pray often and strengthen your faith. In fact, whenever you feel hunger pangs, you will pray harder in line with the purpose of your fast. 

KEY POINT 

Having a purpose for fasting will help you pray right.
