Memory Verse: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6: 19a-20 NIV

Bible Text: Matthew 6:19-21

6:19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

6:21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Sometime ago in Nigeria, a new government realised that many people possessed a great deal of illegal money, so the currency was changed to deal with the situation. The citizens were asked to change the old money to new one within a limited time. Many people were not able to do the exchange before the deadline and they could not spend the old money because it was no longer a legal tender.

Jesus, in continuation of His Sermon on the Mount, instructed His audience, not to lay treasure on earth. This does not indicate condoning indolence and thereby not having any property on earth. The purpose is for them to plan ahead and store their resources in heaven where nothing can affect it negatively. Also, it would focus their thoughts on heaven since that is where their treasure is waiting for them.

The term "treasures" mean different things to different people, but what is important is that we value nothing here on earth as more important than God and His Son, Jesus Christ.

Believers should store their treasures in heaven by making impact in other people's lives and being actively involved in the kingdom business. What is your attitude towards projects in your church?

Insight: Good investors invest where there will be returns.

Prayer: Let me not labour in vain, oh LORD.
