BIBLE READING:

JOB 1:1-8

1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. 2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. 3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east. 4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. 5 And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. 6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. 7 And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?  

KEY VERSE:

“Then the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.” Job 1:8  

MEDITATION:

Job was a man of great wealth, influence and authority, though he lived before any part of the Scriptures was written; he knew God, and lived a godly life. Four sterling virtues were highlighted in the life of Job: he was blameless, upright, God fearing and shunned evil. These qualities are rare today in people who are endowed materially and spiritually, like Job. Little wonder, Jesus said it would be easier for the camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Sometimes men may justify themselves, indulge in self-praise or even be lost in the praise of men who seek for benefit or favour. Satan, the accuser of the brethren would not spare a child of God who fails the test of righteousness, how much more our God who sees and knows all things.  

Samuel after he had divested himself of all authority as judge, priest and prophet challenged the people to “witness against him” (1 Samuel 12:3-4). Daniel lived above board, nothing could be found against him by his colleagues in Babylon (Daniel 6:4).   

God in His omnipotence spoke so glowingly concerning Job. What a great testimonial! God cares about our spiritual life as well as our rectitude and integrity.   

How do you fare where and when you have an advantage or a trust placed in your care?  

PRAYER:

Father Lord, help me to stand at all times, faithful unto You.
