THE SURPASSING GRACE

RBT: Isaiah 47-49

Memory Verse: 'And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you.' 2 Corinthians 9: 14, NIV

Bible Text: 2 Corinthians 9: 11-15

9:11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. 

9:12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. 

9:13 Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. 

9:14 And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. 

9:15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

There has been an unending argument about giving. The world seems to assume an entitlement mindset when it comes to giving to the poor. There is a wave of doctrine that says that giving is a response to an emotional pull. 

However, from Scriptures, we understand that giving is not emotional. Giving is more spiritual than emotional. In fact, giving is a ministry. We give not because we are compelled. We give willingly, cheerfully, whether we have plenty or not. Apostle Paul in the passage was appreciating the generosity of the Corinthian church, explaining that when we give, we sow into our future as well. 

Giving is not without its own reward. Giving is the expression of thankfulness from the giver to his maker. Paul is telling us we need to give freely, willingly, joyfully, and cheerfully. In Greek, the root word of cheerful means “hilarious!” Isn't that a great way to give? We give laughing, with a spirit filled with God's joy. We are like God when we give because He gave us the most-precious gift which is the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ. 

We are expected to tap into God's surpassing grace and be outstanding in generosity.

Insight: A giver's life is always marked by abundance.

Prayer: Father, I receive the surpassing grace to give always
