CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH THE LIVING WATER (January-December, 2023) DATE: Monday, September 25, 2023 TOPIC: AWAY WITH YOU, SATAN (1)

MEMORISE

     Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve'" (Matthew 4:10).

READ:
Matthew 4:1-10

[1]. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

[2]. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

[3]. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

[4]. But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

[5]. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,

[6]. and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’”

[7]. Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’”

[8]. Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

[9]. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

[10]. Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

EXPOSITION

      Tests and temptations have been parts of human history. God tests everyone especially the saints, while Satan tempts through lusts (1 Jn. 2:16). God *tested us* to refine *us as silver is refined* (Psa. 66:10). In fact, He humbled the Israelites and allowed them to hunger, so as to make, not mar them (Deut. 8:3). No one should claim that God tempted him. Why? *...God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed* (Jas. 1:13-14)

     Beloved, as tests come from God (Genesis 22:1) always, likewise temptations from Satan (Matthew 4:1). It is common to all. In Matthew 4:1-10, the temptation there was centred on *If You are the Son of God.* Satan, the tempter, knew that Jesus is the Son of God, but he wanted Jesus to proudly demonstrate it. Every Christian faces such temptation from time to time. And when it does come, not if it will, your attitude should always be: *Away with you, Satan!* Don't tolerate him (Jas. 4:7). Adam and Eve were tempted through food. They failed. The Jews in exodus to their Promised Land failed woefully, too, when they despised God's available provisions in the wilderness, lusting after the Egyptians delicacies they never had. But Jesus, the Saviour, passed every temptation, through the knowledge of God's Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Let the phrase, *It is written,* be your quote whenever temptation comes your way, then you can always command, *Away with you, Satan.*

1. Christ, our mighty Captain, leads against the foe
 We will never falter, when he bids us go;
 Tho' His righteous purpose we may never know,
 Yet we'll follow all the way.

Chorus:
 Forward! Forward! 'tis the
 Lords command,
 Forward! forward to the
 promise land;
 Forward! Forward! Let the
 chorus ring
 We are sure to win with Christ
 our king.

2. Satan's fearful onslaughts cannot make us yield
 While we trust in Christ, our
 Buckler and our shield
 Pressing ever on the spirit's sword we wield,
 And we follow all the way.

3. Let our glorious banner ever be unfurled
 From its mighty stronghold evil shall be hurled;
 Christ, our mighty Captain, over comes the world,
 And we follow all the way.

4. Fierce the battle rages, but 'twill not be long,
 Then triumphant shall we join the blessed throng,
 Joyfully uniting in the victor's song
 If we follow all the way.

Amen.
