CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH THE LIVING WATER (January-December, 2023) DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE DATE: Thursday, September 28, 2023 TOPIC: PASS ON THE TORCH

MEMORISE

    Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

READ:

Philippians 2:12-16

[12]. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;

[13]. for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

[14]. Do all things without complaining and disputing,

[15]. that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,

[16]. holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

EXPOSITION

      Interestingly, we are all spiritual athletes, running in the heavenly Olympics (Heb. 12:1b; 1 Cor. 9:24-26b). We are fighters engaged in spiritual warfare against unseen spirits and powers (1 Cor. 9:26b- 27, Eph. 6:12). From the Wikipedia, the Olympic Games which started in Olympia, Greece, in the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD, were religious and athletic festivals held every four years at the sanctuary of the Greek god, Zeus, in Olympia. The Olympic Flame (Torch) symbolises the commemoration of the theft of fire from the Greek god, Zeus, by Prometheus and has been kept burning since. How shameful that many Christians are no longer holding the Torch of Life! Beloved, what has happened to the spiritual relay baton or torch of the sound Word of God and holiness passed on to you?

      In the O.T., Abraham did pass on the torch to Isaac, Isaac to Jacob and then to Joseph. Moses passed it on to Joshua, just as David did to Solomon. Our Lord Jesus passed it on to the Apostles who have since been passing it on, generations after generations. Grandma Lois, Mother Eunice and Apostle Paul passed it to Timothy. Spiritually speaking, who passed what to you? Is the torch still brightly lit? Be the child of God without fault in this crooked and perverse generation. Don't let those who passed the torch of the Gospel to you do that in vain. Hold fast the Word of life, lest you lose your crown and impact for God in this sin-infested world (Rev. 2:25-28; 3:11). Keep the Torch brightly lit and pass it on to others, intact.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:

CAC GHB 418

1. Oh, spread the tidings round,

 Wherever man is found,

 Wherever human hearts

 And human woes abound;

 Let every Christian tongue

 Proclaim the joyful sound

 The Comforter has come!

Chorus:

 The Comforter has come!

 The Comforter has come!

 The Holy Ghost from heaven;

 The Father's promise given;

 Oh spread the tidings round ;

 Wherever man is found;

 The comforter has come.

2. The mighty Kings of kings

 With healing in His wings;

 To every captive soul;

 A full deliverance brings;

 And through the vacant cells;

 The song of triumph rings;

 The comforter has come!

3. Oh, boundless love divine;

 How shall this tongue of mine;

 To wandering mortals tell;

 The matchless grace divine;

 That I may with Him dwell;

 And in His image shine;

 The comforter has come!

4. Oh, let the echoes fly;

 Above the vaulted sky;

 And all the saints above;

 To all below reply;

 In strain of endless love;

 The song that ne'er will die;

 The comforter has come.

Amen.
