CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH THE LIVING WATER (January-December, 2023) DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE DATE:Thursday, September 7, 2023 TOPIC: THE TONGUE OF THE LEARNED

MEMORISE

      The LORD God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens me morning by morning, He awakens my ear to hear as the learned (Isaiah 50:4).

READ:

Isaiah 50:4-11

[4]. The Lord God has given Me. The tongue of the learned, That I should know how to speak

A word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear To hear as the learned.

[5]. The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not rebellious, Nor did I turn away.

[6]. I gave My back to those who struck Me,

And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

[7]. “For the Lord God will help Me; Therefore I will not be disgraced; Therefore I have set My face like a flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.

[8]. He is near who justifies Me; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand together.

Who is My adversary? Let him come near Me.

[9]. Surely the Lord God will help Me; Who is he who will condemn Me? Indeed they will all grow old like a garment; The moth will eat them up.

[10]. “Who among you fears the Lord? Who obeys the voice of His Servant? Who walks in darkness And has no light? Let him trust in the name of the Lord And rely upon his God.

[11]. Look, all you who kindle a fire, Who encircle yourselves with sparks: Walk in the light of your fire and in the sparks you have kindled— This you shall have from My hand:

You shall lie down in torment.

EXPOSITION

     The organ of taste, the tongue, also principally facilitates speaking. The Bible confirms its activities (Jas. 3:2-5). Today, God is calling us to beware of how we use our tongues. It is untrue to assume, "Talk is cheap" Talk is very expensive. It can mar and make you, depending on the usage (cf. 2 Sam. 1:16). Your words actually outlive you. To have learned tongue doesn't mean being academically sound or being erudite and of international repute. Rather, it is the circumcised tongue, divinely certified and authorised to speak God's mysteries (Isa. 50:4). This is what Prophet Isaiah meant by saying he has the tongue of the learned to declare YAHWEH's unquestionable counsel. There are words for seasons; the more reason you must get your tongue divinely circumcised, to know what to say at every point.

    Beloved, are you a preacher, prophet, teacher or public speaker? You need a seasoned tongue for seasoned words that would glorify God and edify others. What good can people hear from an uncircumcised tongue aside corrupt, damnable, unedifying, idle and foul languages? Paul admonished the Colossian church to let their words be seasoned with salt, to minister grace to the listeners (Col. 4:6). Please, follow that charge. Our world has suffered too much dire consequences due to misuse of tongues. Watch your tongue, else you run into trouble, immediately or ultimately. Be a person of few words that edify others and glorify God, even as you walk your talk. Stay blessed.

SUGGESTED HYMN FOR TODAY:

CAC GHB 452

1. Just as God who reigns on high

 Spake to men in days gone by,

 So the Lord is calling men today,

 And, my brother this is true,

 Whatso-e'er He says to you

 There is but one thing to do just obey

Chorus:

 Just obey, just obey,

 Is the way, God's way;

 When His message comes to you

 There is but one thing to do,

 Just obey just obey.

2. If you're in the Saviour's hand,

 You must do as He commands

 For there is no other gospel way;

 Never put the message by,

 Never stop to reason why,

 When the Saviour speaks to you, just obey.

3. If for mansions fair you sigh

 In that land beyond the sky,

 After time with you has pass'd away;

 Tho' the way you may not see,

 Christ is calling "Follow Me."

 Faith and duty both will cry just obey.

Amen.

PRAYER POINTS

1. O Lord, give me a seasoned, learned tongue, to declare Your counsels to my generation.

2. Lord, help me to bridle my tongue consistently, especially when I am at the extremes of emotions-joy, anger, and sorrow.

3. Lord Jesus, let the tongues with which parents relate with their children in homes, henceforth, be those that glorify You and edify humanity.
