BIBLE READING:

ACTS 9:36-42

36 Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. 37 And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber. 38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. 39 Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. 40 But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41 And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. 42 And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.  

KEY VERSE:

MEDITATION:

There are generally two categories of services - services that come as obligation, and those that come out of passion. The first category stems out of religion, culture or tradition or a regular working environment. They are planned and structured such that the persons rendering the services are obliged to provide them, and they go with minimum pain and inconvenience. However, the second category involves some level of inconvenience and sacrifice. Usually, not prompted by any promised reward.  

Our Christian services could be either of the two categories. However, judging from the story in today’s bible reading, whatever service Christians render should be such that touches God’s heart and brings great joy to humankind. Tabitha was a classic model of a believer that rendered acceptable services.  She reckoned that God owns her and all that she had. It was evident from the grief expressed by the community members that Tabitha was full of good deeds. Moved by their testimonies, Peter prayed her back to life and brought gladness to the community of faith.   

It will be wise to always remember that at the judgment seat of Christ each of us shall be rewarded according to the services we rendered while on this side of eternity.   

If you decide to relocate from your current location or job, how many people will want to do all in their power to make sure you don’t leave? What will you be remembered for?   

PRAYER:

Father Lord, help me to live daily for you and render acceptable services to you and all around me in Jesus name.
