BIBLE READING:

2 KINGS 3:9-15

9 So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom: and they fetched a compass of seven days' journey: and there was no water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them. 10 And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab! 11 But Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord, that we may enquire of the Lord by him? And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said, Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured water on the hands of Elijah. 12 And Jehoshaphat said, The word of the Lord is with him. So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 And Elisha said unto the king of Israel, What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother. And the king of Israel said unto him, Nay: for the Lord hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab. 14 And Elisha said, As the Lord of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee. 15 But now bring me a minstrel. And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.  

KEY VERSE:

“Elisha said, “As surely as the Lord Almighty lives, whom I serve, if I did not have respect for the presence of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, I would not look at you or even notice you.” 2 Kings 3:14   

MEDITATION:

It is significant that Joram formed an alliance with Jehoshaphat in waging war against Moab. Jehoshaphat had been king of Judah for 18 years, ahead of Joram’s enthronement (2 Kings 3:1). So, in terms of political and military experience, Joram had a lot to gain from Jehoshaphat.  

When they ran into trouble, while Joram whined and blamed God for their mishap, it was Jehoshaphat, who had the sense of direction to seek spiritual help. Again, his spiritual maturity came in handy for Joram, who was instantly perturbed.  

When Elisha the prophet was brought in for consultation, it was only for Jehoshaphat’s sake that he offered assistance. Had it been on account of Joram alone, the prophet would have refused.  Once more, Joram gains from Jehoshaphat’s credibility and integrity. Joram didn't have the experience, spiritual maturity, and the credibility to accomplish his goals, but he was wise and intentional in having someone with those qualities on his team. To make significant impact in life, you need a resourceful team.     

Go for individuals, who are more skilled, more experienced, more spiritual, more connected than you. Build relationships across board, vertically and horizontally with people who can add value to you and your life vision.   

Who do you have on your team? What quality of relationships do you have? What is the weight of your social capital?  

PRAYER:

Father Lord, teach me to make wise choices of team members who will add value to my endeavours in life.
