AN EUNUCH BAPTISED

RBT: Ezekiel 16-17

Memory Verse: “As they travelled along the road, they came to some water and the Eunuch said, “Look, here is water. Why shouldn't I be baptised?” Acts 8:36, NIV

Bible Text: Acts 8:34-39

8:34 The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?” 

8:35 Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. 

8:36 As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” 

8:[37] 38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. 

8:39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. 

The Christian faith in Africa possibly dates back to the account of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon believers in Jerusalem at Pentecost. Peter preached his first and historic post resurrection sermon to a multitude of Jewish pilgrims from all over the world, including Africa, to defend their Holy Spirit baptism experience. In response, about three thousand Jews repented and were baptised in a single day. 

Additionally, an African from Ethiopia had a wonderful encounter of salvation. This Eunuch was a religious Jew who had gone to Jerusalem to worship but had no relationship with Christ. Upon hearing the gospel and accepting Christ, he promptly requested Philip the Evangelist to baptise him. “Then, both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptised him.” (v.38). 

Just like the eunuch humbled himself to accept the gospel and immediately got baptised in water, your obedience to the Word of God is more important than your personal opinion. 

The ordinance of water baptism is not by sprinkling of water but immersion in water. Let no believer be ashamed to identify publicly with Christ as His follower.

Insight: No believer is excused from being baptised in water; it is an act of obedience to Christ.

Prayer: Father, help me to always obey Your instructions.
